Airports Near Lake Garda, Italy

Lake Garda is a popular destination for tourists. (Photo: Andy Sotiriou/Photodisc/Getty Images )

Lake Garda, in the north of Italy, is the country’s largest lake. Thousands of visitors flock to Lake Garda each year for the scenery and mild climate. Watersports enthusiasts can enjoy windsurfing and sailing at the north end. Those who prefer a more relaxed vacation may prefer to take one of the many ferries that criss-cross the lake every day. If you are traveling by air, the nearest airport to Lake Garda is Brescia. Other airports nearby include Verona, Venice and Bergamo. Confusingly, Italian airports tend to be known by several names and therefore you should double-check your destination before arranging onward travel.

Lake Garda Airports

Traveling by plane is, by far, the most rapid and efficient manner of getting from one destination to another. The tourist infrastructure of Lake Garda could not lack such a platform for efficient transport means, taking into account the popularity the resorts located on the shore of Lake Garda enjoy with tourists around the world.

Thus, the most advisable airports visitors can resort to in order to get to Lake Garda are Verona Airport and Brescia Airport.

Verona Airport (Aeroporto Valerio Catullo di Verona Villafranca) (VRN / LIPX)

Verona Airport is la larger of the two main airports which service the tourist platform of Lake Garda, being, at the same time, the busier of the two. This feature is mirrored by the number of airline companies which operate here. Air Berlin, Belle Air, Air Italy, Alitalia, Carpatair, Ryanair, Transavia and British Airways are just a few examples, but what matters is, by means of this companies, the airport has fine connections with cities such as London, Madrid, Barcelona, Bucharest, Sharm El Sheikh or Vienna.

Millions of passengers use the airport each year, both for pleasure and for business, and Verona Airport experiences an increasing growth due to the fact it is endowed with facilities and given it provides services useful to all categories of passengers, including people with reduced mobility.

Finally, the airport is easily accessible, and tourists can get here by resorting to a range of means, such as the train, the bus, a taxi or a car (rented or otherwise).

Name: Verona Airport (Aeroporto Valerio Catullo di Verona Villafranca) (VRN / LIPX) Address: 37060, Caselle di Sommacampagna, Verona, Italy Telephone: 0039 0458 095666 Fax: 0039 0458 619074 Website: http://www.aeroportoverona.it

Airport transfers from Verona Airport to the Lake Garda resorts

In the spirit of efficiency, tourists might just as well resort to the services of a taxi. The distance between Verona Airport to the Lake Garda resorts is reasonably short (for instance, some 15 kilometers between the airport and Peschiera del Garda), which is why taking a taxi is a solution at hand from a budget point of view.

Plenty of taxi companies operate in the tourist region of Lake Garda, and most of them include airport transfers in their range of services.

In order to get from Verona Airport to Lake Garda, that is, to those resorts who do have a train station, tourists must first head for the Porta Nuova train station in Verona. The connection between the latter and the airport is covered by a bus line conceived by ATV Verona precisely for airport transfers. The bus operates daily every 20 minutes, between 05:40am and 11:10pm.

For complete details on the ticket price, as well as on the entire network of lines designed by ATV Verona, use the following information:

For details on the trains traveling between the train station in Verona and the train stations within the Lake Garda region, visit Trenitalia.

Brescia Airport (Aeroporto Gabriele D’Annunzio di Brescia Montichiari) (VBS / ICAO)

Brescia Airport is, it too, located only a short distance from the Lake Garda resorts (for instance, some 20 kilometers from Desenzano del Garda). This is a less crowded airport, where the tourist flow is less impressive. The bottom line is, however, Brescia Airport is a reliable solution for people who intend to come and spend their vacation at Lake Garda.

More than 15 airline companies operate at this airport, the most resonant being Ryanair, Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Alitalia, Belle Air and British Airways. By means of these companies, connections are established both with European and non-European destinations

The services and facilities put forward by Brescia Airport have been conceived such as to take into consideration the needs of people with reduced mobility and, roughly speaking, they are sufficiently generous in order to ease passengers’ transit through the airport.

Name: Brescia Airport (Aeroporto Gabriele D’Annunzio di Brescia Montichiari) (VBS / ICAO) Address: 34, Via Aeroporto, 25018, Montichiari, Brescia, Italy Telephone: 0039 0309 656599 Fax: 0039 0309 656514 Website: http://www.aeroportobrescia.it

Airport transfers from Brescia Airport to the Lake Garda resorts

The taxi companies operating throughout the Lake Garda region are often solicited to provide airport transfer services. Tourists can rely on these companies particularly because crossing the relatively short distance between the airport and Lake Garda does not entail significant expenses.

People who do take into consideration to travel between Brescia and the Lake Garda resorts by train must keep in mind the connection between the airport and the train station in Brescia is made by aerobus no. 23 which, in addition, covers the distance between Brescia Airport and the train station in Verona (this alternative is worth considering, though it is less practicable since it extends the trip unnecessarily).

For information on the schedule and the prices for trips with the aerobus, visit Brescia Airport.

For details on the trains traveling between the train station in Brescia and the train stations within the Lake Garda region, visit Trenitalia.

Transporti Brescia is the main company which ensures the public transport within the province of Brescia, including some of the most important resorts on Lake Garda in its network of lines. It’s true there is no line dedicated to making connections between the airport and the said resorts, but one of the most convenient alternatives refers to going from the airport to the bus station in Montichiari (for instance). From Montichiari, tourists can take one of the buses which head for the said resorts.

For complete details on the ticket price, as well as on the entire network of lines designed by Transporti Brescia, use the following information:

Getting To Lake Garda

Getting To Lake Garda By Air

Verona is the closest airport and less than twenty minutes away from the south coast resorts such as Peschiera and Sirmione. There are a number of UK operators offering cheap flights into Verona, including British airways, Easyjet and Monarch. Bergamo, which is about an hours drive to Salo on the west Brescian coast of the Lake Garda, is serviced by Ryanair. Milan’s Malpensa and Linate airports are both about 90 minutes from Salò. Many people like to include a trip to Venice into their Lake Garda holiday and it is becoming more popular now to fly into Venice airport, especially as it is also now serviced by a number of operators offering cheap flights.

Getting To Lake Garda By Car

Whether you are on a touring holiday or have picked up your hire car from one of the airports, Lake Garda is easily reached via the A4 motorway that runs from Milan to Venice. If travelling from the west and heading to the west coast or northern resorts of Lake Garda then take Brescia Est exit and take the Salò road. There are also exits at Desenzano, Sirmione and Peschiera if you are coming from the east or staying at other parts of the lake. Brescia and Verona are both around half an hour’s drive from the lake’s southern tip.

How to reach Lake Garda

  • Take the exit for Lago di Garda Nord at Rovereto Sud. Follow the directions for Lago di Garda, Torbole. From the motorway exit to Lake Garda is roughly 20km
  • Take the exit for Lago di Garda Sud at Affi and follow the directions for Garda, Malcesine, Bardolino or Lazise. From the motorway exit to Lake Garda is roughly 5 km
  • Take the exit for Lago di Garda Sud at Peschiera.

Italian motorways are toll roads: at your entry to the motorway you take a ticket which you hand in with corresponding payment at the toll booth at exit. The price depends on the length of motorway that you have travelled over. If you lose your ticket you will be expected to pay the highest tariff. For further information, tariffs, estimated journey times, useful phone numbers and radio stations, visit http://www.autostrade.it

Unless otherwise written, the speed limit on the motorways is 130Km/h which, when it rains, is reduced to 110

“There are Many Airports and Airlines You can use When Arranging

Your Flights to Lake Garda.

But Which Ones are The Best?”

The great thing about the flights to Lake Garda is the wide choice of different airports and airlines you can use to travel to this area. While some are a little further away, they are also near other great tourist destinations such as Milan and Venice, which can be used as an excuse for wonderful excursions on the way in or out!

So in reality, the time saving driving or taking the train across the south side of the lake does not make a huge difference when flying to Lake Garda.

Other things to consider when you arrange your flights to Lake Garda will be flight times, parking your car at the departure airport, transfers on arrival, which airline you prefer to use or whetheryou are booking a holiday package deal. The major factor for most people is the flight cost and we will tell you what we have found from our experiences of flights to Lake Garda!

Now we know from analysis of our website traffic that many people using this site fly from the UK to Italy to enjoy a great holiday at Lake Garda. Now although the flights themselves play a large part in peoples decision making process, all too often people tend to forget about the much overlooked cost of parking your car at the departure airport. We have found over the years that using the right company and booking early, usually helps to reduce the cost of this oft forgotten necessity! After trying many different companies out, we can thoroughly recommend Purple Parking in the UK, for great prices and services. Why not click the graphic below to find out how much it would cost to park your car at your local airport?

Although this airport is called “Milan” Bergamo, the good thing is it’s located around one third of the way from Milan towards Lake Garda, well outside of Milan. It is therefore quite easy to get to the Lake by car as a few minutes drive takes you straight to the Autostrada (Motorway), where you can soon whizz along to the bottom of the Lake. We have driven to Desenzano from here in not much over the hour. Being a small airport also makes it pretty easy to navigate your way around and there are no long walks. The one thing to be wary of when looking up flights to this airport, is some people refer to it as “Bergamo” and some “Orio al Serio”, which can be confusing. Just remember the code for this airport is “BGY” and then you’ll be sure you’re getting the right one.

Ryanair is the main airline flying to Bergamo (Jet2 also go here), and we have found that their flights here are often the cheapest flights to Lake Garda! Although Verona and Brescia airports are nearer to the Lake, we have often decided that the cost saving is well worth the extra 30 minutes drive. You can also take the shuttle bus from outside the terminal building into the town of Bergamo, and then get a train from Bergamo to your destination in Lake Garda.

Flights to Lake Garda via Verona – Valerio Catullo

http://www.gardalake.com

This is Verona’s main airport located very close to this famous city. We have not really used this airport much as the flight costs always seem to be higher. I am not sure of the reason for this but maybe it is something to do with the fact that the world renowned opera takes place here and so demand is always high. On the plus side, however, the location is great, especially for the east side of the lake which can be reached in around half an hour. If you are not worried about paying a bit extra but just want the quickest way to the lake, then this is one of your best options.

Flights to Lake Garda via Verona – Brescia

Brescia airport is not actually in Brescia at all. it is some way south of the town. As Brescia is not such a high profile Italian location, it is often referred to as “Verona Brescia”. It is a small but modern airport, and is therefore easy to find your way around. From here you can hire a car or get a bus. Shuttles operate into the town regularly where you can catch a train if you wish. We have found this airport to offer some great deals on flights through Ryainair and is certainly high up on the list of options of flights to Lake Garda. We have used this airport several times but the only problem is that there is often only 1 flight a day into here, with many airlines, so there isn’t much option on the time you can arrive and depart.

Flights to Lake Garda via Milan – Linate

The is Milan’s main airport and is situated on the edge of this major city. While this is handy if you fancy popping in to the city, it can also mean lots of traffic if you arrive at the wrong time. I have driven around Milan before and do not find it the easiest city to navigate around. However, several major airlines fly here, so you have plenty of options to get here, but generally the cost is not the cheapest. Consider using this airport if you would like to explore the European fashion capital enroute, otherwise you may wish to consider other options.

Flights to Lake Garda via Milan – Malpensa

This is a minor airport for Milan and is situated some distance to the North East of the city. This is unfortunately heading the wrong way for Lake Garda and means really quite a long trip to get there. We haven’t used Malpensa as we personally consider it to be a bit too far away for our liking. However if you wish to travel around and see other things apart from Lake Garda, then this airport could be worth looking at.

Flights to Lake Garda via Venice – Marco Polo

This is the main airport for Venice and is located close to this amazing city. If you have never been here before and fancy an excursion into Venice, I promise you will not be dissapointed. There really is no other city on earth like this place, it is totally unique in every way! Anyway before I get carried away I should tell you that while this airport is not especially close to Lake Garda, many airlines fly here, giving you a mulitude of options. Venice is a very popular tourist destination though, so prices can be higher (especially at certain times of the year).

Flights to Lake Garda via Venice – Treviso

This is a smaller, minor Venice airport and is located around half an hour North of the city. You can get some very cheap flights here but unless you really want to see Venice, or something else in this area then it is quite a long trip to Lake Garda and would be well down the list of preferred airports in our opinion.

Nearest Airport to Lake Garda – is it Verona

Hi booking holiday to Bella Italia and was wondering is Verona airport the nearest? Aer Lingus are flying there this summer from Dublin !

yes verona airport would be your best option from dublin, you should prob be at the campsite within the hour depending on if you use public or private transport. there is a very good public transport system in Italy and is very reasonable. we have had holidays last few years in Bella Italia (which is great!) but we didnt have option of verona. we flew into milan bergamo which was the best option for us and would also recommend this airport if the days or times of flights suit you better.

let me know if i can help with anything else.

Verona’s airport would be very convenient for you – There’s a shuttle from the airport to Verona, and then you could take the train to Peschiera del Garda, or the bus.

How far is verona airport to bella italia and milan bergemo to bella italia. we are looking to fly from milan bergamo from knock airport but could fly from dublin to verona, what is the best and cheapest means of transport from the airport to bella italia, its our first time going here so would like some advice or tips. thanks

Cheapest from either is public transport. Vagabonda has already given you info for Verona airport.

Similar for Bergamo. There is a shuttle bus from Bergamo Airport to Bergamo train station. Costs €2

You then need 2 trains from Bergamo to Peschiera (1h35 – 1h55 depending on connections) from €7.35 per person single to €14.95 depending on trains (fast intercity or Regional)

HOWEVER – Beware of also economy flying with Mr O'leary. It is a mistake often made and a recurring theme. People book cheap tickets without checking overall transfer. Either the flights arrive too late in Bergamo or depart too early.

The return flights from Bergamo to Knock are so early it is impossible to get there by public transport.

The flights are at 06:55 Wednesday and 07:40 Sunday.

You would require a private transfer.

Somebody like http://www.peschieratransfer.it would normally charge €125 however on a Sunday €143.75

Also would be €143.75 on the wednesday as you would have to leave before 6am which is classed as night tariff.

Verona is far far easier and more convenient.

Airport Hotels in Italy, serving Lake Garda

Airport Hotels in Italy

The airports which serve Lake Garda are listed below, with hotels close to the airports given below. Most have airport shuttle services.:-

Verona Catullo Airport (VRN)

This is the closest airport to Lake Garda and is only about a 25 minute drive from the airport to Lazise, the nearest town to the airport at a distance of only 35km. The airport is served mainly by scheduled and charter airlines including British Airways. This is the only airport where a taxi would be a cost effective option rather than an airport transfer or Car Hire. Realistically an airport hotel is unnecessary with such a short journey to the Lake.

Verona Brescia (VBS)

Verona Brescia is only 50 minutes to an hour from Lake Garda and is also known at Montichiari airport, the distance is less than 40km. This airport is served by Ryanair. None of the hotels have an airport shuttle service.

Milan Bergamo Airport

This is approximately a one hour to ninety minute drive from the airport to Lake Garda and is served by Ryanair, Jet2 and others, it is known as either Bergamo Airport or Orio al Serio.

Milan Linate Airport (LIN)

This airport is East of Milan and about a two hour drive from Lake Garda (140km) depending upon traffic as Milan traffic can get quite congested at various times of day. This airport is served by Easyjet and others.

Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP)

Malpensa airport is considerably West of Milan and would take approximately two and a half hours to get to Lake Garda. The distance is 175km or 110miles. This airport is served by Easyjet and others.

Venice Marco Polo (VCE)

Marco Polo is Venice’s main airport and is 158km East of Lake Garda, approx 100 miles. This is about a
