Lake Garda Holidays

Looking for a trip full of culture, natural beauty and exquisite cuisine, then consider a holiday to Lake Garda with lastminute.com.

Lake Garda nestles between the dolomites of Brenta in the north and the Morainic hills of the south. The destination boasts a Mediterranean climate and a richly vegetated landscape filled with lemon trees, magnolias and oleanders alongside the typical Italian vineyards and olive groves. With a plethora of activities and entertainment on offer it’s no wonder that Lake Garda has become the most popular of the Italian lakes. A holiday to Lake Garda will introduce you to an inland oasis of spectacular views. Boasting quaint villages, lively towns, fresh waters and amusement parks, Lake Garda has something for everyone.

Attractions and activities on holiday in Lake Garda

For those on holiday in Lake Garda with youngsters and those simply young at heart, you’ll find entertainment at one of Garda’s two amusement parks. On the south-eastern corner of the lake younger visitors can play pirates and run round with dinosaurs at Gardaland. Alternatively CanevaWorld is occupied by the exhilarating Aquaparadise and the action packed Movieland.

For a more cultural and historical experience, in the centre of the southern shore you’ll find the quaint village of Sirmione. Boasting a maze of roman ruins and a castle, the village is well worth a visit. From the eastern shore you can take the cable up Monte Baldo for skiing in the winter months and biking, hiking or simple view gazing in the summer.

For all the shopaholics on holiday in Lake Garda don’t fear, you’ll get your fix. From pretty street markets to elegant boutiques, all your needs and wants are catered for.

You could be forgiven for thinking you were at the seaside on the broad southern end of the lake where the waters are a windsurfers dream, and the summers are long with a warm Mediterranean climate.

On a holiday in Lake Garda you’ll have the opportunity to take one of the many easy excursions further afield. Visit Juliet’s Balcony or see an opera in Verona only 30 km away or take a trip to the historical towns of Brescia and Mantua.

Lake Garda boasts easy and efficient rail and road links to most major towns including Milan and Venice.

Food, drink and nightlife on holiday in Lake Garda

Known for its nightlife the towns and villages of Lake Garda offer up a wealth of restaurants, bars and discos. You’ll find typical Italian cuisine, pizza and pasta cooked in lashings of locally produced olive oil ensuring you finish off any meal with a traditional and refreshing digestif.

All-Inclusive Holidays

Give your wallet the week off with an all-inclusive European holiday. All your meals and drinks are included, so you can keep an eye on your spending money – great if you’re on a budget or travelling as a group or family. Have a look at your hotel’s description to see exactly what’s included.

With all the various national tourist boards applying widely varying criteria to hotel ratings, the whole question of international hotel grades has become confused. We have therefore applied our own ‘rating’, representing the general standards of that country in order that fairer comparisons can be made.

Please note: rating may differ from the official star rating of the local tourist board. Our classifications take into account not only the basic facilities, but also the location, leisure facilities, general character and atmosphere of the hotel, as well as customer feedback. Chalet ratings give comparisons with other chalets but do not provide like for like comparisons with the ratings of full service hotels.

Your package price and availability

Our website’s prices and flight, accommodation and room availability are updated every morning. To calculate average price per person, applicable discounts are subtracted from your total cost, which is then divided by the number of adults and children (excluding infants). A full price breakdown can be viewed on the payment page.

In some circumstances, prices and availability may update during the day so you may find price/availability differences later in the booking process.

This is usually due to high demand for the selected holiday. Should you have any issues with this, please contact us or see here for more information.

Bookings made by credit card incur a fee of 2%. Debit cards are free. More information.

Cheap holidays to Lake Garda

Lake Garda: Introduction

Said to be one of Europe’s most astounding sights, a trip to Italy’s largest lake is a holiday not to be missed. Just a short trip from the city of Verona and set within a backdrop of picturesque olive and citrus groves, the majestic Alps and a number of quaint villages and towns, Lake Garda is an astounding sight for visitors from all parts of the world.

Reasons to visit

Aside from inspiring authors and artists, Lake Garda is an inspirational travel spot for holidaymakers too. It’s an extremely versatile holiday destination and one that boasts a wealth of opportunities to explore the surrounding area.

Things to see and do

Aside from indulging in the stunning scenery and breathtaking views, Lake Garda is also home to a number of watersports. Paragliding, hang-gliding and windsurfing are all popular here but if you prefer to stay on dry land then hiring a mountain bike and enjoying a leisurely tour of the surrounding scenery is highly recommended.

Lake Garda boasts an extremely pleasant climate, which makes it an ideal location in which to both sightsee and relax. July is the hottest month to visit, whilst January is the coldest.

Italian Lakes holidays

Italy’s rustic mountain scenery combines with elegant architecture, mixed with adventurous lake-action, grand hotels, gastronomical delights, exquisite views, charming atmosphere and café culture, to make up the beautiful and popular Italian Lakes. At these narrow glacial lakes on the border of Switzerland you will find stunning blue waters, medieval cobbled streets and classic images of glamorous Italian life. Hiring a car is a wonderful way to explore this spellbinding region at your own pace.

Lake Garda

Best time to visit Italian Lakes

• The best time to head to the lakes is from April to October when days are brighter and sunny

• During the summer months the number of visitors rises, especially during August when most Italians go on their holidays; the lakes’ water is generally warmer in July, August and September making these the prime swimming months

• There is often rainfall during the summer and nights are cooler than you might expect following hot days

• From November to March, lakeside beaches and outdoor swimming pools are not always open and the temperature can fall quite low; temperatures fall to single figures between December and February.

Italian Lakes holiday highlights

Visit the exclusive resort of Bellagio on Lake Como and amble along elegant promenades. Watch uplifting classical orchestras on the shores of Lake Maggiore during the Stresa Musical Weeks. From Lake Garda take a tour of the city Mantua and then visit the ecological Sigurta Park, one of the most stunning in the world. Take a beautiful boat trip from Malcesine to Limone, indulging in fantastic shopping and cuisine when you jump off. Visit Gardaland, one of Italy’s best amusement parks and been blown away with its themed fun. Watch an opera under a star-lit sky in the huge Roman amphitheatre, the Arena of Verona.

The seashores and the lakesides have lovely sandy beaches while cities like Venice and Milan are great for a romantic weekend away or a shopping trip. All Inclusive packages are really good value for money. You won’t have to worry about paying for your meals and drinks while you’re there, so you can spend your budget on day trips and activities..

Sant’Agata dei (or sometimes ‘sui’) Due Golfi is named after the martyr Saint Agatha of Sicily. It sits about 27km from the picturesque Amalfi Coast and has wonderful scenic views from the top of its old monastery tower.

    Sant’Agnello

The town of Sant’Agnello in Campania is delightful and the hotels and resorts here are a great base for excursions as well as offering lots of home comforts. The town is 25km to the southeast of Naples and visitors come here for hiking tours around Sorrento, to relax in the local wine bars and coffee shops, and to cruise along parts of the Amalfi Coast.

    Experience Italy

Italy is so beautiful and has such a variety of things to see and do it can be hard to pick and choose. There’s a good variety of activities available if you love exploring nature. Take a walk in the mountains, relax by the tranquil lakes and make the most of the many beautiful beaches. The national parks set in the Mediterranean landscape are well worth a visit if you’re keen on wildlife.

    Arty escapes

The history, art and culture of Italy make for interesting trips to UNESCO World Heritage Sites, museums and galleries. Some of the country’s official ‘art cities’ are famous for their grand buildings and they’re also home to festivals, fairs, markets and entertainment shows. Rome, Florence and Naples are just three of these from a very long list.

Indulge in the world famous cuisine

Italy’s delicious food is world famous, the wines are excellent and Italian ice cream is probably the best in the world. A country that has something for everyone, sunny Italy greets visitors with ‘benvenuto’ (welcome) and before too long, ‘benvenuto indietro’ (welcome back).

    Italy is best for.

Families: Italians love children and you’ll find they’re warmly welcomed across the country. They’ll also be well catered for with the gelato (the Italian’s delicious ice cream).

Globetrotters: Visit the historic old town areas, stroll through the streets and soak up the relaxed Italian way of life, especially the Mediterranean food and wine.

Winter Adventurers: Skiing in the Alps is an experience you won’t forget. Wrap up warm and head for the slopes during the day and then enjoy the social activities in the evening.

    Fast facts

Local Time: As with much of Europe, the local time is one hour ahead of GMT/UK time.

Fly To: Rome, Naples or Milan. You can also get cheap flights directly to the islands of Sardinia and Sicily.

By Train: With a large rail network, getting around by train is easy whether travelling between cities, regions or local towns and villages.

By Taxi: Authorised taxis have ‘Taxi’ written on top and are white. They’re easy to hail when out and about or can be booked in advance.

By Hire Car: Cars can be hired although you normally have to be at least 23 years old (sometimes 25) to do so.

By Motorbike: Biking tours are popular and during the summer you can spot bikers on the mountain passes, at the sea and in the countryside.

For foodies: Italian festivals take place every month of the year and lots of these feature delicious and fresh Italian food. The Alba White Truffle Festival takes place in October in Piedmont and also in Tuscany and Umbria.

For lovers of culture: The Venice Biennale is the star of the art world while the Tuscan Summer Arts Festival (June) is held in Florence each year and features excellent art, food, wine and music.

The Italian Lakes are a stunning area to visit and Bardolino is one of those resorts that produce a selection of beaches. None of these are spectacular but ample for your family to indulge in some water sports or sunbathing.

Most people will want to enjoy some water sports but there are other activities that can be enjoyed by all the family no matter what age such as mini-golf, Tennis and there is a cracking kids play area down by the lake-front, where you can also charter a boat and discover your own part of the Lakes. For the more energetic why not take part in one of the organised trips around the hills where you may be lucky enough to taste some of that famous Bardolino wine.

Come night and you can enjoy a few discos on the fringes of the Bardolino. Travel all inclusive to Bardolino and your hotel will supply the entertainment, failing that you can take advantage of the local bars to supply nightly entertainment and if you wat to eat out then cafes, pizzerias and restaurants will only be too happy to supply you.

The shopping is the normal holiday shops that sell souvenirs, nothing too special. There is a market every Thursday which is well worth a visit.

    Lake Maggiore & Lake Cruise

Our included excursion takes us to Lake Maggiore and the resort of Baveno. Here we take a short boat ride on the lake and sail past the beautiful Borromean Islands. The islands lie at the centre of the lake and are fine examples of natural beauty enhanced by landscaped gardens and parks.

We return to the opulent resort town of Stresa and then continue by coach to Arona, where you will have time at leisure to explore the grand architecture and cosmopolitan atmosphere.

To get the most from your visit, why not join our optional guided walking tour? Accompanied by our local guide we see sights such as the Castello Sforzesco and the magnificent gothic style Duomo Cathedral, the seat of the Archbishop of Milan. St. Moritz & Bernina Region Railway

Today, for those passengers who have pre-booked, our optional excursion takes you to the world famous resort of St. Moritz. Sporting life has always been an important part of St. Moritz, and over 100 years ago the first British visitors use to stage Toboggan races in the streets.

There will be a short amount of time for you to explore before we board the Bernina Region Railway and cross one of the highest railroad lines in the Alps. As we approach the Swiss / Italian border, we travel over the Brusio spiral viaduct, an amazing feat of engineering that allows the train to gradually descend 20 meters in a relatively short distance.

We arrive in Tirano, a quaint Italian town, where we spend a short amount of free time before returning to our hotel.

A ride on the Bernina Region Railway is highly recommended and extremely popular, therefore we recommend that this excursion is booked in advance. The cost is £39 per person. Please ask for details when booking this holiday.
